You take advantage of any opportunity to get your paddle board out on the water. If you want to enjoy your hobby and gear for as long as possible, it’s important to know how to care for your paddle board and the best way to store it. A bit of TLC will keep your board in great shape, while the ideal paddle board storage conditions will protect it from sun or water damage.
How to Care for Your Paddle Board
Your paddle board may spend lots of time in the water, but it can still benefit from a good cleaning occasionally. For example, your board should be clean and free from any sand, dirt and debris before you put it away.
To remove any visible dirt, sand or stains on the board, use a gentle, non-abrasive soap and some water. Wipe with a soft sponge or cloth to remove any marks without scratching the board. Rinse the board with water, then dry completely before putting it away.
Lubricating the fins of your paddle board yearly is vital to keep the metal from wearing away and to protect the fins from oxidation. You can use a standard oil, such as WD-40, on the hardware.
Protect your paddle board when you’re out on the water by steering clear of rocks and other protrusions. It’s a good idea to use a leash with your paddle board, as this tool will keep it from floating away from you.
How to Store Paddle Boards
The way you store your paddle board makes a big difference in its longevity. A few basic things to keep in mind about paddle board storage include:
- Keep your boards away from direct sunlight.
- Always dry your board before storing it.
- Consider storing your paddle board in a bag.
While storing paddle boards indoors is often recommended, that may not be an option for you due to space limitations. You can store your board outdoors, too, with a few precautions put into place. Keeping your board in a shaded area with little to no direct sunlight is ideal. If possible, choose a covered outdoor area so that your board won’t get wet during rainstorms.
You can also store your board on a paddle board storage rack to keep it off the ground and out of the way.
