Knowing safe boating practices is critical when on the water. Water can be unpredictable, and sudden movements caused by natural conditions may cause vessels to bounce off each other. Prioritize your safety and learn how to tie boats properly before you set off for another boating adventure.
Steps on Rafting up Boats
Here are the general steps on how to securely and safely tie or raft up a boat on lakes and other open water zones:
1. Create a plan
Make an entry and exit plan before anything else. As other boaters may join or leave the tie-up party, it’s important to be aware of your surroundings.
2. Ask permission
While boat tie-ups are fun and captivating, never assume it’s an open invitation to join the celebration. Ask first because some may prefer to spend their time more privately.
3. Pick a deep and large spot
Stay far enough from the shoreline so you won’t hit the shore if the raft turns 360 degrees. Choosing a large spot is also crucial so there’s enough space when the boats swing due to sudden movements
4. Drop the anchor of the largest and heaviest boat
The first boat should be the largest and heaviest to serve as the anchor for the raft. If you’re the lead boat, ensure you have the right anchor size and sufficient chain length to keep the anchor set on the bottom.
5. Start aligning boats
When the lead boat is set, it’s time to align boats on alternate sides. The lead boat should be in the middle to maintain symmetrical tensions. When aligning the other boats, position the smaller ones on the edges.
6. Adjust the fender’s height
Tie up with boats similar to yours to avoid hitting other vessels. When tying up, adjust the fender accordingly to ensure that its height matches the boat’s rub rail beside you
7. Toss a line to the neighboring boat
Get lines thrown across and ease the boat in place. You can also pull up alongside and set up your boat. Use the line to pull your boat in position.
8. Tie the bows and sterns to create an “X” pattern
Tie lines to cleats from bow to stern — not bow to bow or stern to stern. The X shape ensures that the boats tied together won’t shift and slam back into each other, even with waves. Check that all lines are as tight as possible.
